Balcas Energy Wood Pellets

ENplus® A1 & BSL certified premium wood pellets — 10kg bags

Balcas Energy is the UK and Ireland's largest producer of high‑grade wood pellets, manufacturing since 2004. Their pellets are made from 100% natural virgin wood fibre — a by‑product of Balcas's own sawmills — with no additives or binders, giving you a clean, hot, low‑ash burn in any pellet stove or boiler.

Produced locally in Northern Ireland and Scotland, Balcas pellets are the trusted fuel for the Laminox and Moretti stoves and boilers we supply and install.

Why Balcas

Why we recommend Balcas Energy pellets

Not all pellets are equal. Poor‑quality fuel means more ash, more cleaning, blocked burn pots and lower heat output. Balcas pellets are consistently made to the highest grade available.

High heat, clean burn

ENplus A1 is the highest pellet grade worldwide — guaranteed high calorific value and very low ash, so your stove or boiler runs at peak efficiency.

100% natural virgin wood

Made from clean sawmill residue from Balcas's own timber operation. No recycled wood, no glues, no chemical additives or binders.

Independently certified

ENplus® A1 certified and BSL (Biomass Suppliers List) authorised, with regular external audits. Balcas was the first in the UK & Ireland to gain ENplus accreditation (2011).

Made locally

Manufactured in Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh and Invergordon, Scotland using renewable energy — short supply chain, stable pricing and a low carbon footprint.

Handy 10kg bags

Easy to lift, carry and store — ideal for homes without a bulk hopper. Strong, sealed bags keep pellets dry until you need them.

Less cleaning, less hassle

Very low ash and dust content means longer intervals between emptying the ash pan and fewer blockages — more warmth, less work.

Storing your pellets

Wood pellets are dry and absorb moisture readily. A little care keeps them burning at their best:

  • Keep them dry. Store indoors or in a fully covered, ventilated shed or garage — never outside uncovered.
  • Off the floor. Leave bags on the pallet or a raised surface to avoid damp from concrete floors.
  • Sealed until use. Only open a bag when you're ready to fill the hopper.
  • Handle gently. Dropping bags breaks pellets into dust, which can affect feeding.
  • Check before loading. Never burn pellets that have got wet or swollen — they can jam the auger.

Frequently asked questions

Will Balcas pellets work in my stove or boiler?

Yes. Balcas pellets are 6mm ENplus A1 pellets, which is the standard fuel for virtually every domestic pellet stove and boiler on the market — including all Laminox and Moretti Design appliances we sell. If you're unsure, give us a call and we'll confirm for your model.

What does ENplus A1 actually mean?

ENplus is the international quality standard for wood pellets, and A1 is its top grade. It sets strict limits on moisture, ash, dust and heat output, and requires regular independent audits. Using A1 pellets protects your appliance, keeps it cleaner and is usually a condition of your manufacturer's warranty.

How many bags will I need?

It depends on your appliance and how much you use it. As a rough guide, a pellet stove heating a living space through the winter will typically use 1–2 bags a day on colder days, while a whole‑house boiler will use considerably more. We're happy to give you an estimate based on your setup.

Can I buy a full pallet?

Yes — we can supply single bags for top‑ups or full pallets for the season. Contact us for pallet pricing and to arrange collection or delivery.

Are wood pellets a renewable fuel?

Yes. Balcas pellets are made from sawmill residue that would otherwise go to waste, from sustainably managed forests, and are manufactured using renewable energy. Wood pellets are classed as a carbon‑neutral biomass fuel.
